There comes a time when you want to contribute to a certain open source project. There is this little thing that you feel you want to add to the project. It could be as little as renaming a function or correcting a variable name. Or adding a major function that you feel the project really requires.

Whatever it is, it will also look good on your CV, having to contribute to an open source project. You can add that to your portfolio for future employers to know that you know your stuff. That you have contributed to a major open source project.

But, how do you start contributing to an open source project? Where do you begin. Here’s how:

Step 0: Fork the project

Click on ‘Fork’ to fork the project into your repository.

Step 1: Clone the forked repo into your machine.

This is pretty straight forward on cloning the repo into your machine. If you do not know how to do this, the Github Desktop app is the simplest way for you to clone the forked repo into your machine.

Step 2: Make the necessary changes
